Day 5, March 10: Blythe, CA

Rest Day

This rest day was a welcome event—time to do laundry, catch up on the blog, and to reorganize packing and gear. Michelle, the trip leader, led a tire changing and bike cleaning session this morning. It was very helpful, and I can now change a tube without touching the chain—a handy trick.

There will be eight straight riding days through the mountains of Arizona and New Mexico before the next rest day. I will have two SAG rotations during that period to provide breaks.

Mom, I've been having so much fun keeping up with your progress and looking at your pictures. It must be so much fun viewing the constantly changing scenery. Love you!!!

Hi Carole,

Well, you're 60, but I'm now a whopping 70!!! Truly entered into old fartdom. Tony just made the sweetest call to me---really warmed my heart.

I just was looking at all the pictures you've taken. What a trip! Sib and I have driven in that area as recently as last Sept. and I remember thinking with him that the route we were on might very well be your bike route. It's awe inspiring that you're doing it. It's so very beautiful and in places weird-the desert pictures you took were so familiar. I know you're having one of the great experiences of your life and I can't say I'm not envious....though I couldn't even come near being able to do it. How great that you chose to do it now while you're still so strong.

I'm sending you lots of love. HOpe you had a great birthday--but how could you miss on this trip.

xoxo Judy
